International Student Visa Requirements
  • International students are required to remain with the same education provider with whom they originally enrolled for at least the first 6 months of the course.
  • Where a student undertakes a prerequisite course prior to commencing their principal course, they must complete the prerequisite study and 6 months of the principal course before changing provider.
  • Students wishing to change education provider during this period, must make an application according to their registered provider's transfer policy.

Student's Address
  • All international students are required to inform their education provider of their Australian residential address within seven (7) days of arrival in Australia and any subsequent change of residential address within seven days.
  • Condition 8506: Student must notifiy Australian immigration, in writing, at least two working days in advance of any change of your address in Australia.
Meeting Course Requirements
  • All student visa holders are required to achieve all course requirements as determined by their education provider and may not repeat a unit more than once. In addition, EICOS students must attend at least 80% of the scheduled course contact hours.

Visa Cancellation
  • Mandatory cancellation of student visas will occur when a student visa holder is assessed as not complying with the requirements of their visa conditions relating to meeting course requirements. Visa cancellation can mean detention, removal from Australia and a bar on applying for other visas, other than a Protection Visa.
  • Current Visa conditions set down by Australian Immigration that international students must be complied with include:
    • Study full-time whilst in Australia currently at a minimum of 20 hours
    • Satisfy course requirements
    • Maintain a valid enrolment with the chosen provider
    • Notify of any change of address within seven days
    • Have sufficient funds to cover tuition fees and living expenses whilst in Australia
    • Do not work more than 20 hours per week during semester
    • Maintain a valid Overseas Student Health Cover
    • Inform Australian immigration of any change in their student status
    • Inform Australian immigration if they withdraw from the course they are enrolled in
    • Students must extend their student visa before it expires
  • Attendance:
    • Illness or other excused absences must be supported by documentary proof. These should be submitted as soon as possible after the absence. A
  • Absenteeism:
    • Students are required to notify Abbey College prior to the commencement of the session/s if they are unable to attend. Students must abide by the following conditions: Students who are absent on the date of major assessments must notify Abbey College of their inability to attend prior to the assessment time.Where appropriate a medical certificate must be supplied. Students who know in advance that an assessment date cannot be met must inform the member of staff responsible for setting the assessment. They may then organise another assessment and inform the Training Coordinator. The Training Coordinator will organise a time for any extra assessments and/or re-sit exams. All extra examination/assessments will be conducted during or prior the last week of a term.
  • FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THIS POLICY MAY RESULT IN SUSPENSION FROM THE COURSE.

  • Reporting Procedures and academic progress
    • Abbey College is required to report to Australian Immigration about non-compliance with course requirements. To ensure reporting is consistent and accurate Abbey College adopts the following procedure:
      • Students can access an unofficial transcript informing them of their academic progress and fee payment status by completing an Office Request Form.
      • Attendance and grades for each term are provided to the client during the first week of the next term in order to enable students to check their attendance and academic progress.
      • Students who receive notification through a warning letter about any irregularities for attendance, academic progress or outstanding fee payment must immediately contact the Student Support Officer or the Training Coordinator to resolve these irregularities.
      • Students who do not resolve the academic irregularities are issued with a final warning letter at the end of the following term.
      • Students who fail to resolve non-attendance problems or satisfactorily address poor academic progress after the final warning letter has been sent, will be reported to Australian immigration.
      • Please note that students who have been reported to Australian immigration are generally not allowed to re-enrol at Abbey College and will normally have their visa cancelled .
    Work Rights Permit

    If Condition 8101 is listed on your visa which means you will not be able to work in Australia unless you apply for permission to work. Applications for a permit to work can only be made in Australia after you have commenced your studies. Once your permit is approved you will be granted one of these conditions:

    Condition 8105 – allows you to work 20 hours a week (other than work which is a registered requirement of your program) when your program is in semester. During semester break, you can work an unrestricted number of hours.

    Leave of Absence
    You are not allowed to take Leave of Absence (LOA) except on these grounds:
    - Illness with evidence of a medical certificate, or
    - Exceptional compassionate circumstances, for example, bereavement (death in family).
    * Approval for LOA must be obtained from Abbey College Australia.
    * Abbey College Australia is required to inform Australian immigration of this variation.
    * Students who have been granted LOA must depart Australia within 28 days, or must contact Australian immigration to discuss visa options. For any leave longer than 6 months granted on any grounds, students may be subject to visa cancellation.
