Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Recognition of Prior Learning is a process where you can claim credit in a training program for skills and knowledge that you have gained from previous work experience and or training programs which can be assessed against one or more units of competency within a qualification. If you can provide evidence of such prior learning, then our workplace assessor can make an assessment and, if applicable, grant credit for what you have already achieved.
Assessment of RPL
We assess your claim by examining your
  1. previous study/experience - must be relevant to the course
  2. knowledge and skill - must be current
  3. the prior learning must be transferable
  4. evidance is reliable - authentic
What is next for you?
  • If you consider you are already competent in specific Units you may be granted an exemption from undertaking the assessment, if your prior learning is relevant to the Unit:
    • Complete RPL Assessment Application
    • Complete QFRMo116 RPL payment (non-refundable)
    • Proof of subject-relevant formal training (Conducted by industry or educational institutions in Australia), or work experience, undertaken in the last 2 years; and
    • Submission of authenticated documents or samples of work demonstrating relevance and currency; and
    • You may be asked to participate in an interview to ascertain current skills and knowledge.

If you apply for RPL two things could happen:
  • We will assess your application
  • You may need to provide additional evidence
  • You may not be granted any exemptions.
  • You may be granted exemptions for some units.

  • Also
  • RPL application must be submitted with enrolment form prior to enrolment.
  • RPL will only be granted before the starting of the course.
Conditions Governing RPL
  • Overseas Students are able to apply for RPL with the following conditions:
    • The student MUST still attend full-time study: approved RPL does not shorten the length of a course or the hours of study. Students will be required to complete additional projects and enrichment activities on the Abbey College site so that their overall attendance remains 20 hours per week for the duration of the course.
    • If RPL is granted to the student prior to having their VISA granted, the duration of the overall course is reduced on the Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment with the Department of Immigration.
    • If RPL is granted to the student after having their VISA granted Abbey College Australia must report the variation in course length via PRISMS.
It is up to you to have your overseas qualifications recognized in Australia. You can find information regarding the qualifications recognition process here:
